VIDEO: Hundreds compete at Langley track and field event

45th Annual Pacific Invitational Track & Field Meet at McLeod Athletic

Athletes of all ages from all regions of B.C. and parts of Alberta competed in the 45th Annual Pacific Invitational Track & Field Meet hosted by the Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club at McLeod Athletic park Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22.

Mustangs head coach Andrew Lenton said the long-standing community track and field event goes back to the late 1970s.

"It's been one of the big events in British Columbia for youth track and field," Lenton commented.

"And we're continuing that tradition."

There were 744 registered athletes, ranging all the way from the six-year-old rascals to U20, senior, and masters categories.

Thirty-two clubs from across the province sent competitors, including  Langley's Trinity Western University, UBC Thunderbirds, and the Athletics Victoria Track and Field Society.

"To get a medal here is a great accomplishment," Lenton said.

"We've got athletes here from all over British Columbia and some from Alberta, and the level of competition is quite high. In some events we've got 30, 40, 50 competitors. So to be a top three place is a challenge for sure."

Langley Mustangs usually place high at the event, he noted.

"Our track and field club does well. We have a really strong program ... it's kind of  a chance to showcase our local talent."
