Langley’s own Rock Step Swing Society is returning for a second year with its monthly “Swing Shift” event, which aims to bring the community together through swing dancing.

The first dance session of the monthly series is being held on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Murrayville Hall from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Swing dance is often known as the happy dance, and it’s one of the most joyous dances in the world, exclaimed society board secretary Mehar Kaur.

“Swing dancing is important to the Langley community as it promotes mental, physical, and social well-being… I love how swing dancing brings joy and happiness to people,” she said.

The event features jazz music from Ben MacRae’s Triple Threat Trio, and a dance performance by the Vitamin Swing Dance Team. There will also be a beginner’s lesson for those who have never danced before to learn the basics.

According to Kaur, the aim of Swing Shift is to help connect people come together and build a stronger and healthier community.

The society aims to achieve this by using community initiatives such as school and senior programs, as well as a range of monthly and annual events and festivals, to bring people together.

“It’s a highly social dance form where people connect with partners and fellow dancers, fostering a sense of community,” Kaur added.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online for $20 in advance at rockstepswingdance.ca, or at the door for $25.

Murrayville Hall is located at 21667 48th Ave.
