VIDEO: How a Langley school ended up hosting a public market

Organizing parents of LSS student were vendors, who were friends with other vendors

Fifty tables set up at the ‘Spring Fling for Mother’s Day Market fundraiser in the gym at Langley Secondary School on Sunday, April 28th, which helped to raise money for the school’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and the dry grad.

It was the idea of LSS parents Phil Smith and Michelle McKinnon, who have more than a little experience with public markets as the husband-and-wife team behind Langley City-based Aloe Terra Hemp and Aloe, a home-based boutique business that makes and markets skin care products like lip balms, lip glosses, lip oils, bar soaps, whipped soap, shampoo bars, bath fizzies, candles and more.

“We’ve been vendors for three years now,” Smith told the Langley Advance Times.

When their daughter started attending LSS, and Michelle became the PAC treasurer at the school, organizing a market in support of the school seemed like a natural next move.

After their first effort, a Christmas Market, did really well, “we just decided to try a spring fling market here for Mother’s Day,” Smith said.

“This is only the second market that we’ve had in this school since, 2019 [due to COVID], so everybody’s really excited to be back and have a great time.”

AT the end of the day, attendance “could have been better,” Smith commented, but he is optimistic there will be another Christmas market at LSS.

“It’ll always be in the school,” he predicted.
